"Prevent Collisions by Using Enhanced Vehicle Safety"
Rosenker Unveils High Tech Tools To Bolster Safety
Moments ago, in the kickoff speech of the 2008 Washington Auto Show Media Day, Mark Rosenker, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), unveiled a new approach to enhancing vehicle safety and preventing collisions. Among other advances, the increased use of telematics, wireless location-based services such as GM’s OnStar, holds particular promise for reducing the yearly number of accident-related fatalities by decreasing response times. In addition to vehicle-based systems, road-based systems are being incorporated into the highway infrastructure to provide drivers with real-time information of weather and road conditions. Perhaps the most startling and innovative direction in car safety is derived from systems currently in use by the nation’s airlines. Since the 1950s, aviation has seen a dramatic reduction in accidents by utilizing navigation aids, radar and ATC control technology, as well as by implementing computerized flight management systems, windshear alert systems and electronic flight control. Many of these areas could have implications for the automobile industry as well, which is committed to providing a gold safety standard for America’s motorists.
